Discernment Counseling

Are you at the point in your relationship where one or both of you are seriously considering divorce? If so, you might want to consider doing Discernment Counseling first to help you in that decision process.

Discernment Counseling is a short-term process (one to five sessions) with the goal of greater clarity and confidence in the decision about a direction for the marriage, based on a deeper understanding of what has happened to the marriage and each partner's contributions to the challenges.

Discernment Counseling is designed to create a "holding pattern" environment while partners are guided through a series of structured sessions which involve questions and processing options. These sessions will be both conjoint and individual sessions with the therapist.

It is important to note that this is not couples therapy and the focus is not on improving the relationship but rather to see if the marriage problems can be solved. There is no relationship homework, teaching of skills, or intentional attempts to have partners to reconnect. Rather it is a way for each individual to gain clarity and confidence in one of three paths--stay the same, separate/divorce, or move into couple's therapy.

$350 for the 2-hour initial conjoint session

$300 for each 90-minute subsequent 4 sessions
